Andrew Bae Gallery is pleased to present Kwang Jean Park's fourth solo exhibition, “Dansaekhwa: Korean Contemporary", from March 4 to April 16, 2016 with an opening reception to the public on Friday, March 4 from 5pm to 8pm.
Dansaekhwa is one of the most important artistic movements in the history of modern and contemporary art in Korea. Kwang Jean Park's core concepts and works in this show overlap many of the key components of Dansaekhwa such as the importance of traditional Korean philosophy, the innovative use of materials in harmonized tones, and the emphasis on repetition and rhythm.
Park previously ventured to balance the extremes of Yin and Yang, whereas her new works emphasize the existence of a new space without boundaries. It is a space inhabited with the floating particles of decomposed solid elements whose interpenetration, interconnection, and interdependence generate exquisite movements - an interplay of tension and release in the realm of absolute equilibrium.
Kwang Jean Park was born in 1957 in South Korea. Her work has been exhibited in South Korea, Japan, Switzerland, Germany, Hungary and France. She works and lives in seclusion on the outskirts of Vancouver, Canada along with her family. Best known as a woodblock artist, Park also paints extensively on free-hanging canvas and constructs intricately layered paper collage works of simple yet remarkable depth and complexity. Andrew Bae Gallery has been representing Park for the past 25 years.
