March 17 - April 21, 2006

Opening reception: Friday March 17, 5 - 8 PM

Young June Lew's passion and discipline are visible in the large-scale mixed media paintings she will exhibit in her 3rd solo show at Andrew Bae Gallery this spring. Many of June's new works are about seven feet tall. They are windows into the drama of human life. She paints figures in loose, flowing robes and gowns that evoke another time and place, although from just what culture or period the clothing comes from is not clear. More mysterious, the figures, although represented in action or formal portraiture, lack bodies, heads, and faces. The works evoke a dual absence and presence. All of Young June Lew's work is concerned with a soulful kind of longing. 'When I was a child, I had a feeling of missing my mother,' says the artist. 'When I was a young woman, I had a feeling of missing a man. Now I have this same feeling, but what do I miss? I miss myself.'
