Painter Leeah Joo refers to contemporary women writers like Joyce Carol Oates and Ann Tyler when she discusses her work. There is a calm abo her spring show at the Andrew Bae Gallery, March 18 – April 9, 2005, Joo presents visually and emotionallyut the young artist one might not expect having seen her skillfully rendered narrative figurative paintings, which, like the literary fiction Joo admires, depict domestic interiors that reveal views into the intimate lives of her subjects. In complex paintings that tell stories through traditional Korean and contemporary American windows. Joo is inspired by the contemporary American culture in which she lives and the Korea she imagines and remembers from childhood. After immigrating with her family to the United States at age 11, Leeah Joo studied in the rigorous art department of Indiana University and was granted an MFA from Yale University. She currently resides in Connecticut with her husband and a new baby. This is her first solo show in Chicago.
