Japanese painter Koji Kakinuma reinterprets complex kanji and kana letterforms in an expressionist style called gyosho, a fluid painting method in which the characters’ strokes, freely interpreted by the painter, suggest animated forms and landscape elements. Kakinuma's brush trails, on handmade paper, appear spontaneous as they trace broad curving swaths of black, grey and red ink.
